DATA FROM 2005 UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED
a Deer-vehicle interaction (DVI) measures are either carcass removals or deer-vehicle incident reports. Please see the data tables that focus on each state for a specific definition of DVI.
b Data for CT, IA, MD, NY, and TX are animal-vehicle crashes. Data is for state-maintained roadways only in NY and does not include property damage crashes on non-state-maintained roadways in CT.
c Vehicle damage cost estimate based on $1,700 per reported crash.

*Nationally, it has been estimated that the total number actual deer-vehicle crashes may be at least twice as large as those reported. In Minnesota, it is believe to be three to four times larger than those reported above. In Wisconsin, 41,687 carcasses were collected in 2005. In Iowa and Ohio, 10,656 and 17,160 carcass collections were recorded just by state maintenance in 2005. As expected, the number of unreported deer-vehicle crashes probably varies from state to state due to different reporting procedures, etc., and few states track statewide carcass collections. Minimum property damage crash reporting thresholds may also be different. The number of reported crashes in Iowa are for animals collisions.
